First of all, keep in mind that the gastric bypass is a weight loss procedure focused on the rerouting of your digestive tract to reduce both the amount of food you eat and the amount of nutrients you absorb. In contrast, the lap-band procedure is a purely restrictive procedure and doesn’t require any surgical alterations to your digestive tract. Instead, the lap-band procedure decreases the amount of food you can eat by placing an inflatable gastric band around the top part of your stomach, which creates a small pouch.

This week’s article provides a general comparison between the two procedures. For a more detailed comparison, please visit the lap-band vs gastric bypass page on our website.

Lap-Band versus gastric bypass – the day of surgery

During the gastric bypass surgery, a weight loss surgeon staples the stomach and connects the newly-created smaller pouch to the middle portion of the small intestine. The whole procedure takes up to three hours and requires, on average, a three-day hospital stay. Due to its invasiveness, gastric bypass surgery can be performed only on an in-patient basis. Conversely, the lap-band procedure takes only an hour and can be performed in an outpatient weight loss surgical facility and with the maximum stay of five hours. After getting a lap-band procedure done at the DayOne Health Chicago weight loss clinic, patients leave the facility the same day and recover in the comfort of their homes.

Lap-Band versus gastric bypass – recovery

The overall recovery time for gastric bypass and lap-band patients is different due to the nature of these two weight loss surgeries. While after the lap-band surgery you’ll be able to come back to your regular activities after three to four weeks, with the gastric bypass the recovery time typically takes between six to eight weeks. Also, keep in mind that while the lap-band recovery process involves mostly healing of the port site, after gastric bypass your healing and recovery is centered around your digestive system’s response to the surgical re-routing. With the lap-band, the only discomfort you can typically expect is the soreness of the port site.

Both lap-band and gastric bypass surgeries will require you to stay on a specific post-bariatric surgery diet for a while after the procedure. For lap-band patients, we at DayOne Health recommend dieting three to four weeks on average. So that your stomach can heal quickly, we first ask you to stay on liquids and then slowly move toward mushy and then soft foods. Gradual transition toward solid foods is a part of a gastric bypass patient’s recovery as well. However, in comparison to the lap-band, the gastric bypass patients need to stay on pureed foods for a few weeks longer before starting to eat regular solid foods.

Lap-Band procedure in Chicago

DayOne Health is a bariatric clinic located in downtown Chicago that specializes in the lap-band adjustable gastric band procedure. Due to the invasive nature of the gastric bypass, our recommended weight loss procedure alternative for significantly overweight patients is the lap-band surgery. Among our favorite features are the lap-band adjustability and reversibility, which provide a more personalized option and more freedom to our patients on their weight loss journey.

If you are a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass patient who regained weight after your surgery, you may be a good candidate for the scar-free revisional procedure called StomaphyX. Usually weight regain after gastric bypass surgery occurs due to a stretched stomach pouch or enlarged stomach outlet. If your weight gain was caused by one or both of these problems, DayOne Health may be able to help. The StomaphyX procedure can deal with the issue in an incisionless and non-invasive manner – making it the safest revisional surgery available.

Until now the only solutions for the stomach stretches after the gastric bypass were LAP-BAND® surgery or the revision of the gastric bypass operation itself. Nevertheless, the latter showed far more postoperative complications than the primary operation and required a longer hospital stay. Moreover, if the stomach has extensive scarring after the first surgery, the laparoscopic method for revision may not be possible and open surgery may be required. Since safe weight loss and the wellbeing of our patients is our priority, we have increased the range of the offered services to the StomaphyX procedure, which has a much lower risk than the standard gastric bypass revision surgery.

You may be wondering how the problem of an enlarged stomach can be addressed without any incisions. The answer is the special StomaphyX device used to perform the surgery. It is introduced into the stomach through the mouth and esophagus, which results in no scarring or cutting around organs. Following the insertion, the device suctions small portions of stomach tissue and fastens them creating small pleats. The resulting folds make the pouch smaller and create restriction, which in turn decreases the stomach’s volume and possible caloric intake.

If you decide to participate in our StomaphyX program, the DayOne Health team will be with you every step of the way toward losing extra pounds or maintaining your desired weight. Starting from the first visit to our Chicago weight loss clinic we will provide you with support and advice at every stage, bringing you closer to your success. Register for our free seminar today to find out more.
