Why LAP-BAND Surgery

According to the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery, bariatric surgery rates have already doubled in the last six years, resulting in 220,000 procedures in 2008 . Why do so many people decide to have surgery to lose weight? The simplest answer would be that nothing else seems to work. While most of those affected by obesity tried traditional methods such as dieting and exercise, not many could talk about a long term success in maintaining achieved weight loss. Our experience at DayOne Health shows that majority of patients seeking our help told us stories of their struggle of losing some pounds, but still not achieving healthy weight, or losing a lot just to gain it all back within next few months.
In contrast to traditional methods, weight loss surgery enables patients to successfully lose 30-50% of their excess weight within six months after surgery, and 77% of their excess weight one year after surgery . Our experience at DayOne Health in Chicago supports national trends. Our patients show average loss of 10 pounds within a month from surgery, and continuous steady weight loss of 5-10 pounds each following month. Off course, the amount of weight lost depends largely on patient’s mindset; therefore, our most committed and successful patients can lose even 15 pounds each month. To improve results of our lap-band patients even more, we offer full follow up program including nutritional consults, meeting with the doctor, and support group meetings. Participation in all of these in timely manner is almost a guarantee of success!
When comparing weight loss results of traditional methods and weight loss surgery, long-term studies show that patients who underwent surgery maintained their weight loss more than 10 years after surgery and achieved greater weight loss than those who didn’t undergo surgery2. The same study indicates that those who decided for the surgery maintained better levels of diabetes, cholesterol, and hypertension. Namely, lap-band surgery is believed to resolve Type 2 diabetes in as many as 73% of patients , while cutting the risk of coronary disease in half. We know that obesity is not only dangerous for physical health, but may also take toll on one’s emotional wellbeing. With this in mind, we try to provide our patients with understanding and care inevitable for success with the band.
